Blog Entry: October 3rd 2010 - MR EDIT, MAN's edits part 1

Hello Funkydooers,

Been a couple of hectic weeks so the blogging has been quiet. Never fear though as we're back this week with some sexy new mixes from Lowlife, Flash Atkins and Smalley so keep your ears peeled! This post, however, is all about DJ Smalley's new studio project MR EDIT, MAN and we hope you like it.

So, firstly, we'll tell you a little bit about EDITS. A 'Re-Edit' is different to a traditional 'Remix' in that a Remix is a completely new track made from the original elements of a record. (i.e the vocal, bassline, drums and guitar riffs as seperate entities.) However, a 're-edit' is effectively the more simple process of re-ordering an original track - taking the good bits of an orginal track and re-hashing it to make it more suitable for modern ears. Then, sprinkling it with a bit of magic dust, beefing up the drums maybe and adding a few other elements to modernise it.

The increasingly powerful software and exponential improvement of computer technology has now allowed people without a masters degree in music technology to create these edits, and this technique has been the main reason for the recent revival of Disco music over the last couple of years. People basically taking old tracks from yesteryear and re-mingling them to make them more accessible for their modern dancefloor sets.

Funkydoo's DJ Smalley has been working on some edits to get his head around the technology involved, and we're now ready to showcase the results in this blog entry with a little explaination of what he did to create these new tracks. MR EDIT, MAN has been born and we're hugely excited about the possibility of recreating any of millions of old tracks that are out there - in fact if you want to suggest an old classic favourite for MR EDIT, MAN to have a crack at, post it on the facebook wall by clicking the link below:

So, onto the edits...

1. Stevie Wonder - Boogie on Reggae Woman
MR EDIT, MAN's Funky Re-Clap

The first track is one of my favourite Stevie tracks with the kind of killer bassline that only the man Stevie could create, and then building up to his sublime soulful vocal hook that can devastate any dancefloor. However, the original is only 3 minutes long and is a bugger to mix so in this version I have simply taken the best bits and extended it to a full 6 minute progressive dancefloor stormer. You'll also notice that i've added some nice Minimoog strings that build depth through the track and most importantly added progressively louder claps that add a funky 'swagger' to the track as it builds.

2. Annie Lennox - Little Bird
MR EDIT, MAN's Boomy Bassfiddle

Big thanks to Guy Bishop and Kelly Blake for their late night help on creating this basstastic mix of Annie Lennox's powerful pop monster 'Little Bird'. This features Annies original vocal of course but we chopped certain elements of her bassline and added some percussive boost to make it a floor-shattering boom bass killer track. We quite like this one and will be playing it out on a dancefloor near you soon!

3. Shabba - Mr Loverman
MR EDIT, MAN's De-cheese Re-mix)

The first edit in the Mr Edit, Man project started out as a bit of a joke when I found a small section at the end of the cheesy 80's hit MR LOVERMAN that actually sounded quite good. So, I've built a whole new track around these few bars of niceness at the end and it now brings a whole new lease of life to the old favourite. Obviously culminating in the smile enducing female vocal of the original at the end. It'll remind you of popping polo's and drinking pints of Ribena at your local nappy night when you was 14 years old and we hope you like it!

So, that's it for now - Mr Edit Man will be knocking out loads more edits over the coming weeks so we'll post them up and play them out as and when they are done.

For now though, have lots of love and underground drinking music, and we'll post up a few more juicy mixes in the coming days...
